The hoverboard is the trendiest means of urban electric transport at the moment.

Since its launch in 2014 many models and manufacturers have appeared on the market.
It is therefore increasingly difficult to make the right choice to buy ahoverboard .

To help you acquire the best product at the right price, we have decided to summarize the important criteria for making the right choice in our hoverboard buying guide .

If you are in a hurry or prefer to have the information in the form of images, we have also made a summary infographic for you!

What is a Hoverboard?

hoverboard back to the future

Technically a hoverboard consists of a board fitted with 2 wheels which operates according to the principle of the gyroscopic effect . That is to say that the machine is easily handled by simple transfer of weight from the user.

The latter can roll the hoverboard in all directions by leaning his body forward and directing it in the desired direction.

The electric skateboard is rechargeable from a simple wall socket and is easily turned on using an on/off button.
A battery indicator lets you know at a glance the level of charge of the device.

What use for the Hoverboard?

family hoverboard

Before buying a hoverboard you have to ask yourself what you want to use it for.

Indeed, there are several ranges of Segway boards and they are not necessarily suitable for all situations.

If you want to use it to go to work or school, we recommend a hoverboard with 8-inch Huracan type wheels .

On the contrary, if the hoverboard is used in leisure mode , a classic 6.5-inch wheel hoverboard will be perfect.

Finally, for a sportier practice and on less stable ground, an All Terrain hoverboard with 10-inch wheels will be the right choice.

Autonomy and Battery

battery of a hoverboard

From a technical point of view the most important element in a hoverboard is the battery .
This is what will make the life of your electric skateboard more or less long and the speed of the machine will be constant over time.

It is important to be vigilant on this point because many sellers (on the internet or in supermarkets) will sell you hoverboards with poor quality Chinese batteries.

This is the case for all cheap hoverboard models and unfortunately sometimes dramas can happen with these low cost batteries.

To be sure to make the right choice in the purchase of your hoverboard, you must favor a device equipped with a battery of a reputable brand and with CE standards .

For example at Weebot , all our hoverboards are equipped with Samsung batteries to CE standards . They have a lifespan of 700 to 1000 cycles, i.e. nearly 20,000 km in total. This is the assurance of acquiring a hoverboard that will work optimally and without technical problems.

Autonomy of a hoverboard

The average autonomy of a hoverboard is 20 km for use from 2 to 3 hours .

Take a good look at the gauge before setting off on an adventure because if your electric skateboard runs out of battery, you will have to bring it back by hand.
And with a device that generally weighs 10 to 12 kg, walking will not be easy 😉

The different prices of hoverboards

By doing a search on the Internet you can find hoverboards at all prices .

As we have seen previously, low cost hoverboards are inexpensive because they are equipped with poor quality components (battery and motor).

Regarding well-made hoverboards, prices can range from 300€ to 700€ depending on the models and wheel sizes.

Classic hoverboards with 6.5 inch wheels generally cost between 300€ and 350€ while all-terrain models with 10 inch wheels are between 500€ and 600€ .

The intermediate ranges with 8-inch wheels with specific features (Bluetooth, removable batteries) are between €450 and €600 .

Beware of scams

As with all popular products, it is not uncommon to come across unscrupulous French sellers or sellers located directly in China .

If the price often defies all competition, it is also necessary to take into account the induced costs that we do not see at first sight.
If your hoverboard is shipped directly from Asia, it will have to go through customs and you will have to pay 20% VAT in addition to which customs fees are added. That is an increase of 25% to 30% of the price.

In addition, these hoverboards being of poor quality, they often break down and are therefore not covered by any guarantee and you will not find any after-sales service to meet your request.

To avoid all these worries, it is therefore preferable to purchase your hoverboard from a reputable brand like Weebot with after-sales service in France and 2-year warranty conditions.

Technical characteristics of Hoverboards

kiwane hoverboard

In terms of technical characteristics, here is the list of points on which you must be vigilant to be sure of making the right hoverboard purchase .

Maximum speed : from 6km/h for children's models to 15km/h for top-of-the-range models such as the Kiwane . For standard hoverboard models the speed is generally 12 to 15 km/h .

Minimum age and weight : 2 years or a weight of 15 kg for child models and 14 years or a weight of 25 kg for adult models.

Load weight : up to 120 kg maximum

Wheel sizes : 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) for children's models. There are 3 sizes for adult models. 6.5 inches (16.5 cm), 8 inches (20 cm) and 10 inches (25.5 cm)

Motor power : from 500 Watts for the children's models to 800 Watts for the Kiwane. For classic hoverboards the power is generally 700 Watts

Distance/Autonomy : from 10 to 25 km for use from 1h30 to 3h depending on the speed at which you drive

Bluetooth : Some hoverboard models are equipped with Bluetooth technology as well as speakers which allow you to listen to music while riding! Cooler no? ;)

Hoverboard Accessories

hoverboard bag

The lower the purchase price of your hoverboard, the fewer accessories you will have delivered with the machine.

It's quite logical when you think about it but it does add costs to take into account during your comparison.

Indeed, reputable sellers like Weebot always provide a carrying bag and remote control with the device.
The bag is very useful in view of the weight of a hoverboard.

There are also a number of optional accessories that are useful to have such as a protective silicone cover for the hoverboard hull, a solid carrying case or even a protective helmet .

The different models of hoverboards on the market

After checking the different technical characteristics and selecting a trusted seller, you now have to choose one of the many hoverboard models available on the market. Here is a non-exhaustive list)

Children's Hoverboard

child hoverboard

Even toddlers from 2 to 7 years old can have fun and go on a hoverboard ride with the whole family.
These specific models can go at a maximum speed of 6 km/h and cover a distance of 10 km .
They are very easy to pick up and usually come with a helmet, elbow pads, and knee pads .

This is for example the case of the Baby hoverboard models from the Weebot brand.

entry-level hoverboard

red hoverboard

The simplest and cheapest hoverboards are classic hoverboards.

They allow you to move intuitively forwards, backwards and make 360° turns. Equipped with 6.5 inch wheels, they can reach speeds of 15 km/h thanks to a 700 Watt motor.

You can drive almost 20 km on a single charge (1 to 2 hours on mains).

All cheap hoverboards from Weebot are equipped with Samsung batteries and after-sales service in France . In addition, you will receive a carrying bag and a remote control delivered with your smartboard.

Mid range hoverboard

self stabilizing hoverboard

A little more expensive than the entry-level models, these Segways are equipped with Bluetooth technology to play music and illuminating LEDs .

Some versions like the Miro from Weebot have a unique design that allows the batteries to be detached .
This is often very useful when traveling by plane because lithium batteries cannot be stored in the cabin.

high end hoverboard

blue offroad hoverboard

The must of the hoverboard are the 10 inch versions which are all-terrain electric skateboards.

You can cover all types of terrain with these models which are often more powerful like the Kiwane hoverboard which has an 800 Watt motor.

The Kiwane is also compatible with your smartphone via a dedicated application.
